All of the story for Pattaya

Bangkok by Mistifarang - el primero Unico de l'Escala

Pattaya’s name progressed out of the march of Phraya Tak (later King Taksin) and his soldiers from Ayutthaya to Chanthaburi. This took place earlier than the fall of the original capital to the Burmese invaders in 1767.

When his army turned up at the vicinity of what’s now Pattaya, he come upon the troops of Nai Klom, who sought to intercept him. When the 2 leaders met in person, Nai Klom was awed by Phraya Tak’s dignified approach and his army’s strict discipline. He then surrendered without having a battle. The location the two armies confronted each other was called Thap Phraya, which means the Armed forces of the Phraya. This was later changed to Phatthaya, which happens to mean the wind blowing coming from the southwest to the northeast at the starting of the rainy season. Today the city is publicly know as Pattaya.

For ages, Pattaya was a little fishing village. But a alter materialized on April 26, 1961, when the principal group of about 100 American servicemen who were fighting in the Vietnam War appeared in Pattaya for relaxation. Out of this beginning, Pattaya were a common beach resort which now draw in hundreds of thousands of visitors. Fishermen’s huts along the beach were replaced by resort hotel and shopping malls. Fishing vessels were adapted to get tourism boats.

Pattaya is located 150 km south easterly from the capital Bangkok on the gulf coast.. Pattaya has become well known for its bars and nighlife, but local government agencies has made efforts to allow to a greater extent family-friendly attractive features and activities, and ordained exhibition and sporting facilities. Even though the sex bussines in Pattaya is performing well, Pattaya also appeal numerous local families and tourist from around the world.
Serious effort has in recent years been cleared by local goverment to improve the quality of Pattaya’s beaches., but they are still not up to the high standards set by beaches in the southern part of Thailand, and the extended development of Pattaya has made the disapearance of the natural beauty which it was launched upon  . Nevertheless, the overplus of hotels and guest houses, and comfortable access from the capital and airport, make it a popular weekend getaway. Providing for over 5 million tourers yearly, Pattaya is as well resourceful to tender an spiffing range of dinning choices and a super motley of things to do and see. You will find a intersting flux of nationalities and a real colorfull heathenish make up from those who call Pattaya their home.

Popweekly: Digest for 11.16

Hong kong by bartpogoda.

Popweekly is a weekly report (at the beginning of the week instead of the end) which contains a digest of news, events, and issues of interest to Popwuping readers. It’s something new I am trying as a means of sharing all that I read over the course of a week. It’s subject to iteration of course - especially this opening paragraph.

The HIV travel ban is lifted. HIV-positive people will at last be allowed to visit America.

For 22 years America has banned HIV-positive people from entering the country without a hard-to-get waiver for fear of the virus spreading. It has not hosted a big international AIDS conference in more than a decade either, because many HIV-positive activists would not be allowed to attend. Only a dozen other countries, including China and Russia, have similar restrictions, and there is no evidence that these bans halt the spread of AIDS. Instead, many say, it makes things worse by stigmatising carriers of the virus.

Drugs, scams and beat downs. Just another night of ‘Big Trouble in Tourist Thailand’

A new documentary has the Thai tourism industry scrambling to clean up its act. “From adrenaline fuelled drug busts, organized tourist scams, scorned lady-boys, violent brothel disputes, bar room brawls, brutal murders, street robberies and sexual assaults, the series is filmed in the popular tourist hotspots of Koh Samui, Phuket, Bangkok, Pattaya and Chang Mai.”

These top hotels combine service, technology, and comfort—everything that today’s business traveler needs on the road. All would agree, however, that the best business hotels first and foremost make it easy to accomplish the work you came to do. At the very least, that means a central location, efficient check-in and checkout, reliable and high-quality technology, comfortable work spaces, attention when you need it and quiet when you don’t.

Picture Show: Four Days in Dubai.

Dubai can seem more like a mirage than any place on Earth—even in the shade, it’s marvelously bright. Whether the city is the most precious gem in the United Arab Emirates’ crown or merely a piece of costume jewelry is up for debate; regardless, its very presence is remarkable. But for all its pomp and extravagance, there are real people who work and live there. Through the lens of the photographer Dustin Aksland, who recently traveled to the famed metropolis on a separate assignment, the city takes on a strikingly humble tone. What follows is a selection from Dustin Aksland’s “Four Days in Dubai.”

GigGuidetw.

It’s unfortunate that Taiwan/Taipei (one and the same to many people) lacks a good cultural events calendar. There are so many great things happening here which are incredibly difficult to discover outside of the personal networks we all develop. Steve Leggat’s GigGuide helps keep people informed about the latest live music happenings in the indie music scene. He hopes to reduce those “What!? [insert band name here] played in Taipei and I didn’t know about it? How did I miss that?” conversations that we all inevitably experience. It’s an excellent effort and very well designed. If he could only be persuaded to expand his coverage to include other types of events then we could all stop complaining about what we missed and start complaining about how we have no free time to see all that is available.

FUGITIVE AUSTRALIAN THIEF OF AUS$1 MILLION RING ARRESTED IN PATTAYA : Pattaya Daily News

Pattaya, October 28, 2009, . Bangkok Immigration Police arrested an Australian fugitive early on the morning of October 26 in Pattaya. The man is accused of having staged a daring smash-and-grab from a Melbourne jewellery store in which he stole several items of jewellery, including a diamond ring worth almost Aus$ 1 million. The man initially denied the charge, but later confessed. He is likely be extradited to Australia to face charges after a preliminary trial in Bangkok.

The police surprised the 30-year old man, George Georgiou, who was staying with his Thai girlfriend in P.S.Apartment, Central Pattaya, at 12.30 am, on 26 October. Georgiou had entered Thailand via Suvarnabhumi Airport from Melbourne on October 17. The police confronted Georgiou with an arrest warrant issued by the Victoria police, dated 19 August, 2009, in connection with a robbery from upmarket Hardy Brothers Jewellers , Melbourne ,Victoria, where jewellery items were stolen, including a 9.1 karat diamond ring, worth about Aus1$million/ Bt 30 million. The incident had apparently happened at 4.40 pm, on 29 March 2009. On the arrest warrant was a photo, which Georgiou acknowledged was of him, along with his name and other details, but he initially refused to accept the charge, professing his innocence.

The Bangkok Immigration Police team, led by Pol.Lt.Col. Pariwat Satjatham, were acting in collaboration with the local police on behalf of the Victoria police, who had requested the aid of the Thai police, co-ordinated through the Office of the Attorney General. The request was made by the Victoria police following the discovery that Georgiou had fled to Pattaya. Police asked him to explain certain evidence found in his possession, namely a white item similar to diamond, 7 green precious stones, 4 pink ones, a blue one, a jewellery scale, a device for measuring the size of jewellery items, 2 magnifying glasses, a bank book with Bt900,000 baht, a mobile phone and 50 small plastic jewellery bags. When presented with this evidence, Georgiou said the jewellery items were fake, and that he had bought them all in Pattaya and Bangkok.

The Bangkok Immigration Police then arrested him and took him back to Bangkok to hold him in custody. At a press conference held at 2pm the same day, police revealed that, after questioning Georgiou, he had, in fact, confessed to the robbery, but had maintained all the jewellery he had stolen had been sold on to jewellery shops and other individuals (‘fences’) whose names are being withheld. Georgiou said he was a jewellery collector. He will initially stand trial at the Bangkok Criminal Court, before a decision is taken as to whether or not to extradite him to Australia.

The Brisbane Times reported at the time of the robbery that the thief – “dressed in black and wearing a black beanie - used a 1.8-kilogram hammer to smash the hole in the display window of Hardy Brothers Jewellers in Collins Street. Detective Senior Constable Al Brgoc of Melbourne City detectives said he was surprised by the brazen nature of the theft.” The thief apparently “grabbed the hand-made 9.1 carat round brilliant cut solitaire engagement ring, billed by Hardy Brothers as the Million Dollar Ring, and fled into an arcade and along nearby Equitable Place,” The Brisbane Times reported on March 30, 2009… The robbery was apparently conducted in broa

I was in Pattaya last night with the remote control in my hands flicking rapidly through the channels when I stopped and went back to the one that had passed by in the blink of an eye — I’d seen something very interesting.

It was His Majesty King Bhumibol being pushed in a wheelchair, obviously at the hospital. Adoring Thais were seen everywhere in the background of the news footage.

I watched the news report to its conclusion. It was good to see His Majesty up and around, though the 81 year old monarch looked very weak after a month in the hospital, with a pillow propped behind his head in the wheelchair.

Hopefully his recovery will continue.

Here is the news report from today’s Bangkok Post:

King appears in public
Well-wishers at hospital given welcome surprise

* Published: 24/10/2009 at 12:00 AM
* Newspaper section: News

His Majesty the King has appeared in public for the first time after spending more than a month in hospital being treated for inflammation of his lungs.

Hundreds of well-wishers crowding Siriraj Hospital’s compound to check for news updates were given a welcome surprise when they saw the King come down from his hospital ward on the 16th floor yesterday afternoon.

Sitting on a padded electric wheelchair, His Majesty was accompanied by doctors, nurses and security officers.

“Long Live the King,” cheered the people as the King travelled past lines of well-wishers to pay homage to the statue of King Rama V, his grandfather.

Yesterday was Chulalongkorn Memorial Day. The nation commemorated the day when King Chulalongkorn (Rama V) passed away 99 years ago.

Well-wishers, when seeing His Majesty, kneeled to pay their respects. Many were tearful while others yelled out loudly to wish the King a long life.

The King’s unannounced public appearance helped ease the concerns among many people about his health.

“My worries have now disappeared after living with rumours for weeks,” said Prapai Bunsawan, 79.

Like other people who signed a visitors’ book for the King, Ms Prapai urged politicians to stop arguing. Good deeds and a peaceful society would keep the King happy, she said.

His Majesty, who wore a blue shirt, was looking cheerful yesterday. He talked with doctors occasionally as cardiologist Pradit Panjawinin wheeled him round.

Dr Pradit is a director for Her Majesty the Queen’s Cardiac Centre at Siriraj Hospital.

The King also went to pay homage to a statue of Prince Mahidol of Songkhla, his father, and a portrait of Her Royal Highness Princess Srinagarindra Boromrajajonani, his mother. He also saw the exhibition of his late mother, held to celebrate the 109th anniversary of her birth on Oct 21, before moving on for a sightseeing tour around many areas of the hospital compound.

What’s not to love about New York City? My favorite borough is Manhattan, though each one certainly has its advantages. There are so many things to do in Manhattan, and I could spend a lifetime keeping myself busy.

I’ve lived in a few neighborhoods throughout the city, and I plan on spending time in more as time allows me to. My favorite thing about Manhattan is that you could relocate by something as small as ten blocks, and you’ll be in a completely different world.

I’ve done my best to explore each as much as I possibly can, though I’ll never have the time to fully immerse myself as much as I’d like to. The city is simply too big for that.

Having spent a lot of time around Manhattan, I’d like to offer you some advice if you’re looking to travel here. Hopefully you’ll enjoy these neighborhoods as much as I do.

I’d like to open this article up with a mention of the East Village, probably my favorite neighborhood of them all. Having spent some time living there, I’ve never fallen out of love with this great neighborhood.

There’s so much character here, and such a wide variety of cultures make their mark on this portion of Manhattan. You could get just about any kind of food if you were to walk a few blocks in any direction, and that’s a beautiful thing.

The West Village is very similar, yet it’s a bit more mature. So many small cafes and boutique clothing retailers fill some very scenic tree lined blocks, making for a beautiful setting and a very lively neighborhood.

If you’re looking for more of an educational experience where you see landmarks, museums, and historical sights, then you might really enjoy the Upper West side of Manhattan. This is home to things like Rockefeller Center, Central Park, many museums, and near Times Square as well.

The East Village, Upper West side, and West Village are just two of the dozens of exciting areas in Manhattan. If you haven’t been to these, I know you’ll enjoy them when you see them.

If youre going to Pattaya or live there, have you considered using the internet to meet girls? Internet dating and social sites are very popular with Thai girls because many girls are too shy to go to the bars, but would like to meet Western men anyway.
